Illustration Questions

I create most of my illustrations on an iPad (iPad Air 5th Gen) using the software, Procreate.
I also dabble in traditional mediums such as gouache, alcohol/watercolour markers, coloured pencils and fine point pens to create mix-media pieces. I love experimenting with my sketchbooks, this is where I find my best ideas.

I draw a lot of inspiration from my childhood and growing up in the Pilbara. I incorporate a sense of playfulness and vibrancy to my works.
Nature is another big source of my inspiration, coming from the country I draw inspiration from animals and plants. I love using my imagination to create worlds with cute and fun charac

I keep a physical notebook and one on my phone, I write down any random ideas that comes to me, bad or good!
Once I have an idea in mind, I write out keywords to describe my scene and then I follow by creating 2-3 rough thumbnails of different ideas based on those keywords. This is also where I start to play around with potential colour schemes.
Once I have a thumbnail that I am happy with. I will create a really rough initial sketch. The messier the better! This is where you want to make any major changes to your illustration.
I will create another sketch, creating a more defined sketch. I don’t usually do line art at this stage.
I will go straight into the colour stage of the piece. I continue to build up the piece by adding textures, lines and shading but mostly trying to keep the piece flat. I add a few more small details to make the illustration pop and I am done!

Art style is something that is ever evolving. My art style five years ago is very different to what it is now. I expect that my art style will change again in the next five years.
My biggest advice is to not be so fixated finding the ‘right’ style. I have also found experimenting and learning is the best way to discover what you like and hate to do. Study other artists, learn a new subject or play around with a new colour palette is things I find helpful.

I think art block happens to everyone and it is totally normal! I think not experiencing some sort of art block along your creative journey would be abnormal to say the least.
For me in the first instance, I just accept that I am in this situation and just know that this feeling is only temporary. Usually I take a step back from my art for a couple of days, a week or even a couple of months. This is different for everyone!
I try to focus on my other hobbies or explore new ones! I often like to take long walks in nature, listening to my favourite music that makes me happy. Even cleaning sometimes clears my head!
When you do end up wanting to make art again. Take it easy, draw your guilty pleasures, explore new subjects or even just make messy doodles. Putting pen to the paper is the hardest step. Good luck!!
